Big Big Greenie and Little Big Greenie are the best of friends. From morning till night, they stick together, chattering away as if they were talking about everything under the sun to thin air.Occasionally, they’d tilt their heads and preen each other’s feathers—probably tickling one another. We’d long since come to think of them as family, with Big Greenie as the steady older brother and Little Greenie as the charming younger sister—until that day…
After being kept in captivity for quite some time, Big Big Greenie and Little Big Greenie finally let down their guard around us and gradually built up complete trust. We thought it was time to let them taste the freedom of the wide open sky. At first, we just took them on short test flights around the neighborhood, but later we finally took the plunge and boldly set them completely free. The first time we let them fly, we stood downstairs waiting, our hearts in knots. One moment we worried they might fly away and never return; the next, we couldn’t help but reassure ourselves. Just as our patience was about to run out, they finally fluttered back to the balcony—and all that anxiety instantly burst into overwhelming joy. From then on, we felt much more at ease and gave them complete freedom to fly whenever they wanted.Until that day, when Big Greenie flew out and never came back…
Friends and family had all sorts of theories about what happened, but in the end, we all agreed on one conclusion: Big Greenie must have run off with his girlfriend! A neighbor who’d kept parrots told us we’d misidentified them all along—Little Greenie wasn’t a girl at all, but a boy.
Big Greenie and Little Greenie had been with us for such a long time; they’d long since become inseparable companions. When the kids were running around and playing in the living room, they’d perch on their perches and chirp a few playful notes; when the adults sat down to work, they’d occasionally let out a soft chirp or two—not too loud, but just enough to keep the house from feeling too quiet. After Big Greenie left, Little Greenie became much lonelier, and later, Little Greenie also passed away unexpectedly. Even now, when I think of them, my heart is still filled with a warm, fuzzy longing.

I want to say to Big Greenie:
Your quick wit is in your very bones. It took a full half-year before you were finally willing to let down your guard and settle into our arms, peacefully spending one lazy afternoon after another with us: flipping through books together, watching the clouds outside the window, and when we hear birds singing in the woods, you’ll even look up and chirp back in response
.
Your flight is truly a marvel. You can weave and weave even within the confines of a small room, coming and going like a green breeze, never knocking over a single thing.
Whether you’ve lost your way after perching on an unfamiliar tree, or found a mate and flown off to distant forests, we can only offer our blessings. May you have wind and trees, food and companionship, and may you fulfill your innate longing for freedom.
